Our Stunning Area
The park is located just outside the vibrant village of Allendale, in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Within an hour's drive of much of the busy North East of England (and a similar distance from the Lake District), this area offers amazing opportunities to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and find some real peace and quiet. Here, two cars can be considered a traffic jam; the noise of birdsong drowns out distant traffic; the views are amazing and the starry night skies, with low levels of light pollution, are a sight to behold.
Allendale lies about a mile from the park and can be accessed by car or a choice of footpaths (riverside or along the road). There is a selection of shops (including an excellent, independent Co-Op) 3 pubs, an Art Cafe and Tea Rooms. The village hall hosts regular activities and annual events include the spectacular Tar Bar'ls New Year bonfire and celebration, the May Fair, Flower Show, Agricultural Show, Folk Festival and the Allendale Challenge fell race. Nearer to the park is the small hamlet of Catton, where The Crown offers a quiet place for a drink or meal within a comfortable walking distance.
